THRIVE! Program Supports Theaters of Color with Grants

NEW YORK – the Theater Communications Group (TCG), in partnership with the Theater League of kansas City, has announced the recipients of the 2025 THRIVE!: Uplifting Theatres of Color grants. This initiative provides crucial general operating support to eight Black, Indigenous, and Theaters of Color (BITOC) across the U.S., including tribal nations and territories. The THRIVE program supports theaters of color and addresses historical funding disparities.
The recipients include Bishop Arts Theatre Center (Dallas), East West Players (Los Angeles), GALA Hispanic Theatre (Washington, D.C.), Karamu House (Cleveland), North Carolina Black Repertory Company (Winston-Salem, N.C.),Repertorio Español (new York City),St.Louis Black Repertory Company (St. Louis), and The Ensemble Theatre (Houston). These grants for theaters of color recognize their enduring power and resilience.
Emilya Cachapero, co-executive director of national and global programming at TCG, emphasized the importance of the grants. “These grants recognize the enduring power and resilience of BITOC and community-serving theaters,” Cachapero said. ”We’re grateful for the Theater League of Kansas City’s commitment to uplifting the transformative work happening across these organizations.”
Mark Edelman, president of the Theater League of Kansas City, echoed this sentiment. “The geographic, social, and cultural diversity of these groups makes this program especially important today, as the performing arts find themselves under siege from customary public support,” Edelman said.
