in the play categories, Kara Young won Best Featured Actress for “Purpose,” while Francis Jue took home Best Featured Actor for “Yellow Face.” Sarah Snook was awarded Best Leading Actress for her performance in “The Picture of Dorian Gray.”
The musical categories saw standout performances recognized, with Maleah Joi Moon winning Best Leading Actress in a Musical for “Hell’s Kitchen” and Jonathan Groff securing Best Leading Actor in a Musical for “Merrily We Roll Along.” Like Malone won Best Featured Actor in a Musical for “Operation Mincemeat: A New musical,” and Kecia Lewis earned Best Featured Actress in a Musical for “Hell’s Kitchen.” Joy Woods was named Best Understudy.
Behind the scenes, Patricia Delgado and Justin Peck won Best Choreography for “Buena Vista Social Club,” and Marco Paguia received the award for Best Orchestrations, also for “Buena Vista Social Club.” Will Aronson and Hue Park won Best Book of a Musical and Best Original Score for “Maybe Happy Ending.”
In design, Paul Ardi won Best Sound Design of a Play for “Stranger Things: The First Shadow,” while jonathan Deans won Best Sound Design of a Musical for “Buena Vista Social Club.” Jon Clark won Best Lighting Design of a Play for “Stranger Things: The First Shadow,” and Jack Knowles won Best Lighting Design of a Musical for “sunset Blvd.” miriam Buether and 59 won Best Scenic Design of a Play for “Stranger Things: The First Shadow,” and Dane Laffrey and George Reeve won Best scenic Design of a Musical for “Maybe Happy Ending.” Marg Horwell won Best Costume Design of a Play for “The Picture of Dorian Gray,” and Paul Tazewell won Best Costume Design of a Musical for “Death Becomes Her.”
“Buena Vista Social Club” was named Best Musical, while “Purpose” won Best Play. “Yellow face” was awarded Best Revival of a Play, and “Gypsy” took home best Revival of a Musical.
special Tony Awards were presented to the musicians of “Buena Vista social club,” recognizing their contributions. The illusions and technical effects team of “Stranger Things: The first shadow” were also honored. Harvey Fierstein received the Lifetime Achievement in the Theater award, and Celia Keenan-Bolger was awarded the Isabelle Stevenson Tony Award.
Tony Honors for excellence in the Theatre were given to Great Performances, Michael Price, New 42, and the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts.
