The 2025 Tony awards are underway at Radio City music Hall in New York City,celebrating the pinnacle of Broadway achievement. The American Theater Wing’s 78th annual celebration is broadcast live on CBS-TV and streaming on Paramount+.
Sarah Snook received the first televised award, securing Best Actress in a play for her performance in The Picture of Dorian Gray. Earlier in the evening, Will Aronson and Hue Park won Best Book of a Musical for Maybe Happy Ending.
Cynthia erivo, a Tony winner for The Color Purple and a Wicked Oscar nominee, is hosting the ceremony. This year’s top nominees include Buena Vista Social Club, Death Becomes Her, and Maybe Happy Ending, each with 10 nominations.
The Best Musical category pits Buena Vista Social Club, Death Becomes Her, Maybe Happy Ending, Dead Outlaw, and Operation Mincemeat: A New Musical against each other. Competing for Best Play are English, The Hills of california, John Proctor is the Villain, Oh, Mary!, and Purpose.
Audra McDonald made history with her record 11th Tony nomination for Best Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical for Gypsy. George Clooney is also in attendance,nominated for Best Actor in a Play for his role as Edward R. Murrow in Good Night, and Good Luck.
The 2025 Tony Awards will also feature a special performance by the original cast of Hamilton, celebrating the musical’s 10th anniversary.
