Snooker’s Class of ’92: Legends vie for Historic Win
The “Class of ’92″—Ronnie O’Sullivan, John Higgins, and Mark Williams—continues to define the role of snooker legends. Together, they boast a combined 14 world titles: seven for O’Sullivan, four for Higgins, and three for Williams.
On May 5, should either Williams or O’Sullivan capture the trophy, they would surpass O’Sullivan’s previous record to become the oldest champion in the modern era. O’Sullivan was 46 when he set the mark three years ago.
The three first met as driven teenagers 33 years ago, each aiming for the top of the sport. Williams recalled meeting Higgins at the final of a 1990 event when both were 15.
“We played in the final and he beat me 6-1 on live TV,” Williams said. “He had five grand for the win, and I got three grand.”
Williams later defeated Higgins 4-0 in the British Under-16s in Birmingham. “That was the first time I really remembered John, as it was me and O’Sullivan playing in all the junior events when we were 13 and 14,” Williams said.
Williams and Higgins share a storied Crucible Theatre history, having clashed six times in Sheffield.Williams holds a 5-1 advantage, including an 18-16 victory in the 2018 final.
“That world final was one of the best games I’ve ever been involved in,and people say it was the best final ever,” Williams said before their moast recent match.
Despite a recent defeat, higgins acknowledged Williams’ skill. “He’s a great champion,” Higgins said. “The atmosphere out there was incredible, a standing ovation walking in. There’s no better place to play, win or lose.”
