2026 Australian Guineas Day: Tips, Best Bets & Contenders

February 25, 2026 David Thompson Sports

Flemington Racecourse is set to host a compelling day of racing this Saturday, headlined by the Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m). While Observer currently holds the favorite position, a thrilling challenge is expected from Planet Red, seeking to avenge a recent narrow defeat at Caulfield. Ten three-year-old talents will compete for the coveted title.

The Australian Guineas, a key race on the calendar, is attracting significant attention, with Ciaron Maher’s Observer leading the charge. However, Mick Price, trainer of Planet Red, remains optimistic about his gelding’s chances, aiming for his fourth victory in the prestigious race. Chris Waller’s Sixties also emerges as a significant contender, adding another layer of excitement to the event.

Observer, a Ghaiyyath colt, enters the race with a strong pedigree, having previously secured a win in the G1 Victoria Derby at Flemington. The colt will be ridden by Ethan Brown, who also guided him to victory in the G2 Autumn Stakes, breaking from barrier six. Despite Observer’s strong form, Planet Red is poised to challenge that dominance. Racing and Sports data reveals Planet Red holds a two-one lead in head-to-head battles against Observer.

Mick Price acknowledges the challenge posed by Observer, stating, “He’s a nice, uncomplicated gelding and he’ll show up, but everything will have to go right for us to turn it around on Observer.” Price further emphasized his respect for Observer, adding, “My opinion is Observer is the clear good horse, and we are there to do our best.”

The Australian Guineas boasts a rich history, with the first race held in 1986. It has become one of Flemington’s premier Group 1 races, attracting a distinguished honor roll of winners. Notable past champions include Mahogany, an eight-time Group 1 winner, and Apache Cat, a brilliant sprinter-miler. More recently, Shamus Award, the 2013 Cox Plate winner, added his name to the list of Guineas victors.

Trainers Colin Hayes, Lee Freedman, and Mick Price have each prepared three winners of the three-year-old feature. Hayes notably produced Zabeel in 1990, who later sired three Australian Guineas winners himself – Mouawad (1997), Dignity Dancer (1999), and Reset (2004). This makes Zabeel the only former winner to achieve such a feat.

Damien Oliver currently holds the riding honors with three victories, two of them for Lee Freedman, including a win with Flying Spur in 1996. Champion filly Miss Finland also secured victory in 2007, having already claimed wins in the STC Golden Slipper, MRC Thousand Guineas, and VRC Oaks.

Six fillies have successfully competed against colts and geldings in the race’s 40-year history, with Legarto being the most recent, crossing the Tasman to score a hard-fought victory. The Group 3 C.S. Hayes Stakes has traditionally served as a key lead-up race for colts and geldings, with 17 Australian Guineas winners emerging from it, and eight completing the double. The Group 2 Autumn Stakes is another successful pathway, producing ten Australian Guineas winners, five of whom also completed the double.

The competition between Observer and Planet Red is particularly compelling. Planet Red is seeking redemption after a narrow defeat at Caulfield, and Price is confident his gelding is ready for the challenge. The gelding’s previous head-to-head record against Observer provides a glimmer of hope for an upset.

The presence of Sixties, trained by Chris Waller, adds further intrigue to the race. Waller is a highly respected trainer, and Sixties’ performance could significantly impact the outcome. The race promises a thrilling spectacle for horse racing enthusiasts, with a strong field vying for the coveted title.

As of February 25, 2026, Observer remains the horse to beat, but Planet Red’s determination and Sixties’ potential make this year’s Australian Guineas a race to watch closely. The event is scheduled for this Saturday at Flemington Racecourse, promising a memorable day of racing.
