Ireland to Reconsider eurovision 2026 Participation over Israel’s Inclusion
Ireland has announced it will likely withdraw from the 2026 Eurovision Song Contest if Israel is permitted to participate, citing deep concerns over the ongoing conflict in gaza. The decision, made public today, follows extensive discussions within the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) regarding the appropriateness of Israel’s involvement given the humanitarian crisis.
The issue first surfaced at the EBU’s General Assembly in July, where multiple member broadcasters voiced objections to Israel’s participation. In response, the EBU offered broadcasters an extension – until December 2024 – to withdraw from the contest without financial penalty. RTÉ, Ireland’s national broadcaster, has now confirmed its intention to utilize this option should Israel compete in 2026.
“It is RTÉ’s position that Ireland will not take part in the 2026 Eurovision Song Contest if the participation of Israel goes ahead,” a statement from the broadcaster read. The final decision, however, will be contingent on the EBU’s ultimate ruling on the matter.
RTÉ’s stance is rooted in the escalating loss of life in Gaza and the broader ethical considerations surrounding the contest. The broadcaster specifically highlighted its “deep concern” regarding the targeting of journalists in Gaza, and also restrictions on press access to the region, and the continued detention of hostages. These concerns reflect a growing international debate about the role of cultural events in the face of political conflict.
The EBU has not yet announced a final decision regarding israel’s participation. The association is facing increasing pressure from various sides, balancing its commitment to inclusivity with the need to address the serious humanitarian concerns raised by multiple broadcasters. The outcome will undoubtedly set a precedent for future events and the intersection of politics and entertainment.
