New Silver Eagle Coin Launches with Historic Dual Date, Commemorating 250 Years of American Independence
A new version of the American Silver Eagle went on sale today, , at noon Eastern Time. The 2026-W Proof American Silver Eagle, produced at the West Point Mint, features a unique design element: dual dates of 1776 ~ 2026. This commemorates the nation’s semiquincentennial – the 250th anniversary of American independence.
The coin also bears a Liberty Bell privy mark with the number “250,” further emphasizing the historic milestone. According to the U.S. Mint, the American Silver Eagle series debuted in 1986, initially offering bullion versions for investors and proof versions for collectors. Proof versions have since become highly sought-after numismatic products, with hundreds of thousands sold each year.
The 2026-W Proof American Silver Eagle contains one troy ounce of .999 fine silver and showcases the Mint’s signature proof finish, characterized by reflective, mirror-like fields and finely frosted designs. The coin’s obverse features Adolph A. Weinman’s iconic Walking Liberty design, originally used on U.S. Half dollars from 1916 to 1947.
The reverse of the coin, redesigned in 2021, depicts a bald eagle in flight, carrying an oak branch. Inscriptions on the reverse read “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “1 OZ. FINE SILVER,” and “ONE DOLLAR.”
The U.S. Mint is also offering a Congratulations Set that includes a Philadelphia-struck proof American Silver Eagle, but this version does not include the dual date or the Liberty Bell privy mark.
The obverse of the coin includes the inscriptions “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and the dual dates “1776-2026,” along with the designer’s initials, “AW.” The reeded edge of the coin serves as an added security feature.

The 2026-W Proof American Silver Eagle is priced at $173 and has a limited mintage of 500,000 coins. It is available for purchase through the U.S. Mint’s online store. Each coin is encapsulated in a black clamshell box and comes with a U.S. Mint certificate of authenticity.
This release coincides with the 40th anniversary of the American Silver Eagle program (1986-2026), making it a particularly significant issue for collectors of the series.
