Women’s Super-G at Milano Cortina 2026: Goggia Leads Home Hope, Vonn Out With Injury
Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy – – The women’s Super-G, the second speed event of the Alpine skiing program at the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026, is scheduled to take place today in Cortina d’Ampezzo.
The race arrives with a notable absence: U.S. Star Lindsey Vonn will not compete after suffering a complex tibia fracture in a crash during the women’s downhill competition on Sunday. The injury effectively ends her participation in the Games.
With Vonn sidelined, all eyes turn to local favorite Sofia Goggia. The 33-year-old Italian claimed bronze in the downhill at the Tofane Skiing Centre and currently leads the World Cup Super-G standings with one win and two podium finishes this season.
Another athlete to watch is New Zealand’s Alice Robinson. The giant slalom specialist secured her first career win in the opening Super-G event of the season in St. Moritz, followed by a second-place finish a week later in Val d’Isère, demonstrating her growing prowess in the discipline.
The field also includes contenders looking to make their mark. Reigning silver medalist Federica Brignone of Italy, who posted an encouraging 10th-fastest time in the Olympic downhill following a period of recovery from injury, is expected to challenge for a medal. Switzerland’s Malorie White, winner of the most recent World Cup Super-G event in Crans-Montana, also enters the race with strong form.
Germany’s Emma Aicher is another medal contender, having topped the podium in Tarvisio last month. She is looking to add to her two silver medals already won at these Games.
PyeongChang 2018 gold medalist Ester Ledecka of the Czech Republic will also compete, just days after participating in the snowboard parallel giant slalom (PGS) event.
The competition will be without Lara Gut-Behrami, who will miss the race due to injury, and Stephanie Venier, who retired at the end of last season.
The Super-G course in Cortina d’Ampezzo is known for demanding power, focus, and commitment from racers from start to finish. With only one run determining the medalists, the stakes are high, and every split-second counts. The absence of Vonn has undoubtedly reshaped the competitive landscape, creating opportunities for other athletes to step up and contend for Olympic glory.
World Cup Super-G podiums from the 2025-26 season have been varied: Alice Robinson and Romane Miradoli shared the podium in St. Moritz with Sofia Goggia. Sofia Goggia and Alice Robinson were joined by Lindsey Vonn in Val d’Isère; Emma Aicher, Lindsey Vonn, and Ester Ledecká took the top three spots in Tarvisio; and Malorie Blanc and Sofia Goggia shared the podium with Breezy Johnson in Crans-Montana. This lack of a dominant force underscores the unpredictable nature of the discipline and the potential for surprises on Thursday.
