21 Days of Peace: A Desperate Bid to Douse the Flames in the Middle East
International Community Calls for 21-Day Ceasefire in Middle East Conflict
The United States, the European Union, and several Arab countries have proposed a 21-day ceasefire to cool the situation in the Middle East and facilitate a diplomatic solution to the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah.
Recent attacks by Israel on Hezbollah targets in Lebanon have resulted in hundreds of deaths, thousands of injuries, and tens of thousands of displaced people. The Lebanese Ministry of Health reported an additional 72 deaths today.
In a joint statement, the United States, Australia, Canada, the European Union, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar emphasized the need for a diplomatic solution, stating, “It is time to come to a diplomatic solution that allows civilians on both sides of the border to return home safely.”
The statement continued, “However, diplomacy cannot work when the conflict escalates. Therefore, we call for the immediate implementation of a 21-day ceasefire on the border between Lebanon and Israel to provide space for diplomatic mediation to facilitate a diplomatic solution.”
The proposal comes as the United Nations General Assembly begins its General Debate this week, with a series of diplomatic activities in response to the growing situation with Hezbollah in Israel taking place on the sidelines.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot discussed the proposal at an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council on Lebanon, stating that France and the United States had proposed the idea of a three-week ceasefire ”to facilitate negotiations and reach a more permanent ceasefire agreement.”
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has previously urged a moratorium on attacks in Lebanon, warning that “the door to hell is about to open.”
Israel has expressed its willingness to use diplomatic means to deal with Lebanese affairs, but has not committed to a ceasefire, instead promising to achieve its goal of weakening Hezbollah.
