Two men were hospitalized following a two-vehicle motorcycle collision on VT Route 5A in West Burke on May 16, 2026.
According to a news release from the Vermont State Police, the incident occurred at approximately 5:46 p.m. Near Sargents Road. The crash involved two motorcycles traveling on the route.
Details of the Collision
The investigation conducted by the St. Johnsbury Barracks determined that Anthony Gibson, 22, of Montpelier, was traveling south on VT Route 5A. Authorities stated that Gibson was unable to maintain his lane of travel, causing him to cross the center line and collide with a second vehicle.
The second vehicle was a 2009 BMW G 650 GS operated by 70-year-old Gilbert Trenholme of Barton. Both motorcycles sustained severe damage and were deemed totaled as a result of the impact.
Injuries and Medical Response
Both operators sustained injuries during the crash. Gibson was reported to have sustained serious, non-life-threatening injuries. He was transported to Dartmouth Hospital for medical treatment.

Trenholme sustained moderate, non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital.
The Vermont State Police were assisted at the scene by several agencies, including the Sutton Fire Department, the West Burke Fire Department, Orleans Rescue, and Trusted Towing.
Investigation Status
The crash was investigated by Trooper Matthew Salazar of the St. Johnsbury Station. As of May 17, 2026, the investigation into the incident remains ongoing. Authorities have indicated that charges are pending against Gibson.
