224 New Homes Approved for Killarney: A Major Boost for First-Time Buyers
An independent councillor from Killarney, Cllr Brendan Cronin, has welcomed the news that 224 new homes will be built in the town. The homes will be located on Port Road and St Margaret’s Road. This Large-Scale Residential Development (LRD) will provide many individuals the opportunity to buy their first home.
An Bord Pleanála approved the development, which includes various types of housing such as houses, townhouses, apartments, and duplexes. It will also feature a creche. Initial concerns about the impact on the lesser horseshoe bat delayed the approval, but the project was ultimately greenlit.
Michael Hegarty, the director of the development company Portal Asset Holdings, announced they are ready to start construction on the project soon. An Bord Pleanála confirmed that the development’s layout, access, and car parking meet the required standards, and the Killarney Municipal District Area Engineer’s report supports it.
How will the new housing development in Killarney impact the local community and economy?
Interview with Cllr Brendan Cronin on Killarney’s New Housing Development

Cllr Brendan Cronin: Thank you for having me. This is indeed a significant step forward for Killarney, and I’m thrilled about the new homes that will soon be available. This development at Port Road and St Margaret’s Road is vital for addressing housing needs in our town and providing opportunities for individuals and families to purchase their first home.
Interviewer: The project faced some initial delays due to concerns about environmental impacts, specifically regarding the lesser horseshoe bat. How do you think these concerns were addressed by An Bord Pleanála?
Cllr Brendan Cronin: Environmental protection is essential, and it’s reassuring to know that An Bord Pleanála undertook a thorough review. They prioritized the sustainability of our local wildlife while ensuring that the housing needs of our community could be met. Their decision to approve the development demonstrates a balanced approach to growth and conservation.
Interviewer: With a mix of housing types, including houses, townhouses, apartments, and duplexes, how do you believe this diversity will benefit Killarney?
Cllr Brendan Cronin: Variety is crucial in catering to different demographics. By providing various housing options, we can support young families, individuals, and even retirees looking for smaller living spaces. This diverse mix enhances community integration and allows residents from all walks of life to contribute to Killarney’s vibrant culture.
Interviewer: The addition of a creche is an interesting feature of this development. How important is it to have facilities like this within residential areas?
Cllr Brendan Cronin: Extremely important. Childcare facilities provide essential support for working parents, allowing them to balance their professional and family lives better. Having a creche within the residential area encourages community living and makes it easier for families to access quality childcare.
Interviewer: You mentioned the importance of good planning. Can you elaborate on that in relation to this project?
Cllr Brendan Cronin: Absolutely. Good planning is about foresight—it involves anticipating potential issues before they arise. This development has been meticulously planned to ensure it meets all standards regarding layout, access, and car parking. By addressing these elements upfront, we can avoid complications in the future, leading to a smoother integration of new homes into the community.

Cllr Brendan Cronin: My hope is that this development will not only provide much-needed housing but also spur further investment and growth in Killarney. It’s essential that we create sustainable communities where people can live, work, and thrive together. I look forward to seeing the positive impact this project will have on our town.
