Wojcicki Nonprofit Wins Bidding War for 23andMe Assets
A nonprofit association spearheaded by Anne Wojcicki, co-founder and longtime CEO of the genetic data firm 23andMe, has emerged victorious in a last-minute bidding war to acquire the majority of 23andMe’s assets. The winning bid totaled $305 million, according to a company press release. This acquisition highlights the critical role Wojcicki plays in the company’s future.
The Wall Street Journal initially reported the news, which surfaces less than a month after biotech giant Regeneron announced its intentions to purchase 23andMe out of bankruptcy for $256 million. The bidding process underscores the significant role of strategic acquisitions in the biotech industry.
23andMe officials stated that the agreement facilitated a final bidding round between the TTAM Research Institute, led by Wojcicki, and Regeneron. This process was designed to enable the company’s board to secure the most advantageous deal for its shareholders, ensuring the best possible outcome in this crucial role.
