Guatemala’s national crisis helpline, known as line 1582, will operate permanently with extended hours starting October 10, 2026,prensalibre.com reported. The service provides free and confidential psychological first aid and emotional support for individuals experiencing mental health crises or suicide risk.
Initially launched as a temporary resource for World Suicide Prevention Day, the helpline received substantial public demand during its first weeks of operation. The expansion includes round-the-clock WhatsApp support to handle incoming requests from users nationwide.
Expansion Following 972 Consultations Across Ten Departments
The decision to make the helpline permanent stems from the volume of inquiries recorded between September 10 and October 5, 2026. During this 26-day initial phase, the 1582 service logged 972 consultations from 856 individuals spanning more than 10 departments in Guatemala,prensalibre.com reported. Data compiled by the Fundación Desarrolla Guatemala para la Educación y la Salud (Fundegua) shows that 85 percent of those inquiries arrived via WhatsApp, involving people of varied age groups. The data indicates that one out of every seven consultations involved suicide risk or self-harm.
Fundegua operates the project under its ALMA initiative in partnership with various institutions and organizations. Gabriela Asturias, president of Fundegua's board of directors, said individuals in emotional distress need response channels that are accessible and non-judgmental.
Detrás de cada consulta hay una persona que se animó a escribir o a llamar, muchas veces por primera vez. Queremos que, a cualquier hora, encuentre a alguien dispuesto a escucharla sin juzgarla.

Extended Hours and New WhatsApp Availability
To manage the sustained volume of messages and calls, the project has added eight professional psychologists specializing in crisis intervention. The team comprises both male and female specialists trained to handle emotional distress and high-risk situations.
Starting October 10, 2026, the service structure includes:
- WhatsApp support at 3007-1582, operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
- Telephone calls at 1582, answered Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
The service remains entirely free and confidential for callers and chat users seeking guidance for themselves, family members, or acquaintances.
Permanent Transition Scheduled for World Mental Health Day
The permanent transition of line 1582 takes effect on October 10, 2026, coinciding with World Mental Health Day. Organizers intend for the continuous availability to lower barriers for individuals experiencing anxiety, panic attacks, severe discouragement, or thoughts of self-harm.
