Army Battalion Members Face Charges After Alleged Village Assault

Medan,Indonesia – Twenty-five members of an Army battalion in Medan,North Sumatra,have been named as suspects in the alleged assault on Selamat village in Deli Serdang regency last November. The declaration comes after a month-long investigation by the Bukit Barisan Military Command’s military police.
“Of the 50 personnel we interrogated, we’ve named half of them as suspects,” Lt. Gen.Mochammad Hasan, Bukit Barisan Military command chief, said during a press briefing on Tuesday.
The military police will now hand over the case to Indonesian Military (TNI) prosecutors, who will prepare indictments against the suspects for submission to a military tribunal.
Lt. Gen. Hasan emphasized that the military police had considered recommendations from the national Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) and the Witness and Victim Protection agency (LPSK) during their investigation.
“The investigation is still ongoing as of today.The military police will make sure that the prosecution is completed,” he said.
Lt. Gen. Hasan also offered an apology on behalf of the TNI to the people, notably the victims, for the assault on Selamat village.
