’28 Years Later’: A Hallucinatory Reinvention of the Zombie Film
Danny Boyle and Alex Garland are back, reimagining the landscape of zombie films with “28 Years Later,” a movie already generating buzz. The plot thickens on an isolated island, where young Spike, portrayed by Alfie Williams, faces a harrowing rite of passage. He must venture onto the quarantined mainland to confront his first infected, guided by his father,Jamie, played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson.
Adding to the tension is the mysterious illness afflicting Isla, Jamie’s wife and Spike’s mother, brought to life by Jodie Comer. Her visage evokes a young Diane Keaton, especially reminiscent of “Looking for Mr. Goodbar.” Jamie seeks a cure, leading them to the unconventional former physician, Ian Kelson, portrayed by a delightfully unhinged Ralph Fiennes.
The film’s action sequences are designed to grip viewers. Anthony Dod Mantle’s cinematography, a hallmark of Boyle’s work, echoes the hypnotic visuals of ”Trainspotting.” Jon Harris’ editing weaves in fragments of Rudyard Kipling’s poem “Boots,” a hallucinatory reminder of history’s cyclical nature. The film suggests a need to learn from life’s lessons, a “memento mori” and “memento amoris,” as voiced by Fiennes’ character.
Cillian Murphy appears in the credits of “28 Years Later” as a producer.
