28 Years Later, the latest installment in the zombie franchise that began with 28 Days Later, presents a coming-of-age narrative set in a post-apocalyptic world. The film not only continues the saga of the Rage Virus but also lays the groundwork for a sequel, The Bone Temple.
The movie opens with Jamie’s ill-fated attempt to initiate his son, Spike, into adulthood. Their scavenging trip to the mainland exposes Spike to the harsh realities of a Britain ravaged by the Rage Virus. Disappointed by his father’s dishonesty and infidelity toward his ailing mother, Isla, Spike embarks on a perilous journey with her to find a doctor rumored to live on the mainland.
As they struggle to survive, Spike and Isla discover that the Rage Virus has evolved, introducing new and terrifying forms of infected.
New Zombie Lore
While 28 Days Later popularized the concept of “fast zombies,” the infected in this universe are not technically undead. They are living hosts consumed by the Rage Virus, which drives them into a state of perpetual fury. Unlike traditional zombies, they can starve to death and be killed with a shot to the heart. However, they possess incredible resilience, seemingly impervious to pain due to the constant adrenaline surge.
28 Years Later introduces “slow Lows,” bloated, crawling creatures, and “Alphas,” infected that are taller and stronger than average. The Alphas exhibit a disturbing tendency to tear out the heads and spinal columns of their victims, using them as trophies.
The film also suggests a deeper complexity to the infected. A pregnant infected woman gives birth to a non-infected baby and displays a moment of humanity during the delivery. The Alpha who impregnated her appears horrified by her murder, hinting at the possibility of affectionate relationships among the infected.
The Ending
Spike and Isla seek refuge at a temple made of bones, constructed by Dr. Kelson, played by Ralph Fiennes. Kelson, who has learned to coexist with violence, subdues the infected with sedatives rather than killing them.He reveals that the temple is a ”Memento Mori,” a reminder of the inevitability of death, and diagnoses Isla with terminal cancer.
Kelson helps Spike accept death and suffering while maintaining hope. Spike names the miracle baby isla, after his mother. He leaves the newborn with his community and sets out to travel the mainland alone.
Spike encounters Sir Jimmy Crystal, portrayed by Jack O’Connell, a man who abandoned his child to religious delusion during the initial outbreak. Crystal’s unsettling demeanor and his gang of hoodlums suggest that Spike may have stumbled into an even more dangerous situation.
The film concludes with a similar message to The Boy and The Heron, suggesting that while the old ways are dying, something new is emerging. The upcoming sequel, The Bone Temple, will explore what becomes of spike in this new world.
What’s next
The upcoming sequel,The Bone temple, promises to delve deeper into the evolved world of the Rage Virus and the fate of spike as he navigates the dangers of post-apocalyptic Britain.
