30 Years of Silence: The Haunting Disappearance of David Ahlonko Bruce in Togo
The 30-Year-Old Mystery of David Ahlonko Bruce’s Disappearance
Thirty years have passed since the kidnapping of David Ahlonko Bruce, a senior official in the Togolese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the case remains shrouded in mystery.
The Day of the Kidnapping
On September 6, 1994, David Ahlonko Bruce dropped off his daughter and his wife’s niece at school before heading to the office. However, his Peugeot car was allegedly cornered by two military buses near the headquarters of the Togolese Armed Forces. He was pulled out and taken away in one of the military vehicles, leaving behind his terrified children.
A Fruitless Search
The parents were informed of the incident and immediately began searching for David. They visited the Gendarmerie camp, but were told that he had never been there. The Vatican and the American State Department were also involved in the search efforts, but to no avail. Despite numerous calls for investigation, the Togolese authorities failed to provide any information about David’s whereabouts or the circumstances of his disappearance.
Amnesty International’s Involvement
On September 7, 1994, Amnesty International launched a campaign called “‘Disappearances’ and Fears of Extrajudicial Executions” and contacted the President of the Togolese Republic, the Prime Minister, and various ministers. The organization expressed concerns about David’s disappearance and called for an immediate investigation to establish his whereabouts and identify those responsible for his kidnapping.
A Decades-Long Wait for Justice
Thirty years have passed since David’s disappearance, and the case remains unresolved. The truth, justice, and reconciliation process has not shed any new light on the matter. The family has made statements, but no new information has come to light to ease their pain. They now hope to find David’s remains and organize a funeral, but it remains to be seen if they will ever get this chance.
