More than 300 people attended the seventh annual Greenfield Oktoberfest fundraiser in Greenfield, New Hampshire, on October 3, 2026, defying a powerful Nor’easter that swept up the East Coast, the Monadnock Ledger-Transcript reported. Organizers faced severe logistical hurdles, including a town-wide power outage and surging winds, as they prepared to host the community event at Oak Park.

Planning Around a Coastal Storm

Planning an outdoor community fundraiser requires accounting for unpredictable weather patterns. Jesseca Timmons, secretary of the Friends of the Greenfield Community Meetinghouse and reporter for the Monadnock Ledger-Transcript, noted that setting a rain date for Oktoberfest is impossible. Beer and wine vendors, musical acts, Oak Park, and event volunteers book their schedules solid throughout the autumn months.

Organizers monitored detailed forecasts throughout the week from Francestown meteorologist Cyrena Arnold, whose updates helped steady the planning committee as severe weather warnings escalated. Volunteer cooks Todd Powell, Tyler Baldwin, and Warren Aldrich needed to begin food preparation well in advance, chopping potatoes, cabbage, and crafting handmade spaetzle.

Tent Donations and Musical Adjustments

Ahead of the storm, logistics fell into place through local contributions. John Hopkins, owner of Monadnock Tent and a founder of the original Oak Park Committee, donated a much larger tent equipped with walls to shelter vendors and seating areas. Hopkins brings decades of local event experience to the grounds, having organized the Blues-B-Que for 20 years.

As weather models confirmed heavy rain by Wednesday, musical acts expressed concern for their gear. Organizers relocated the performers under the park’s picnic pavilion so they could execute an acoustic set safely protected from the elements.

Power Outage Strikes During Setup

The storm’s impact hit directly at 1 p.m. on Saturday during final event preparations. A falling tree limb brought down wires on Forest Road just outside the park, knocking out power to approximately 100 buildings in town and triggering a loud, continuous alarm inside the Oak Park kitchen.

Crew members managed the emergency by disconnecting the kitchen alarm battery to restore quiet. The facility’s gas stove and oven allowed cooks to continue food preparation without electricity, while generators powered the vendor tent lighting and musical equipment. Unlike the 2023 fundraiser—when a kitchen oven failure forced volunteers to shuttle spaetzle pans across town—this year’s team relied on a gas setup and portable sanitation units.

Eversource Restores Power Early

Greenfield police and fire departments responded immediately to the downed lines on Forest Road, followed by crews from Eversource. Utility workers restored electricity a full hour ahead of initial projections, bringing lights back on at 3 p.m. as the skies cleared.

With power restored, volunteers rushed to complete preparations. Cooks transferred food into warming ovens, buffet lines opened, vendors tapped kegs, and musicians powered up their equipment just as visitors began arriving ahead of forecasted evening weather worsening.
