Kentucky Couple Realizes Homesteading Dream After Tiny Home Project

Sophie Hilaire Goldie, 37, and Rocky Goldie, 50, turned a shared vision into reality when they purchased a 37.5-acre homestead in rural Kentucky. The couple,who previously converted a shed into a tiny home,sought a property with history and ample land for their homesteading lifestyle.
Their search led them to a fixer-upper with two combined log cabins dating back to the 1840s, a smaller cabin, and two barns. Despite the initial disrepair,Sophie Goldie saw the property’s potential.Rocky Goldie, initially hesitant, was won over by Sophie’s optimism.
The couple secured a 30-year mortgage and have since invested approximately $13,000 in renovations and tools.Their efforts have focused on clearing the land, removing pests, and restoring the buildings. The Goldies are committed to transforming their homestead into a self-sustaining haven, emphasizing sustainable living.
Sophie goldie said, “I knew it would be the last time I was moving and where I’ll spend the rest of my life… Finding home in Rocky and this home felt like I could finally let go of the burden I was carrying on trying to find a place.”
The couple is cultivating a garden, planting fruit and nut trees, and raising over 30 animals, including chickens and goats. They use the resources from their land to produce eggs, milk, cheese, and other goods. Sophie and Rocky are also renovating a room for canning,aiming to preserve their harvest for the future.
Rocky Goldie said he has learned to appreciate life beyond his career. “It’s ingrained into you in this culture that people identify themselves with their jobs… When I left, I thoght I would probably sit back and think about what I would be doing at work today but it never happened. The only thought that I have now is why I didn’t do it sooner.”

The Goldies plan to continue improving their homestead and documenting their journey on YouTube. Sophie also intends to further develop her skincare company, Seoul + Soil, inspired by her life on the land.
