Ethiopia Unveils Ambitious Mega Airport Project to Revolutionize African Aviation

Ethiopia is set to redefine air travel on the continent with the development of a colossal new international airport, poised to⁤ become Africa’s largest and most advanced aviation hub. Valued at approximately £4.5 billion, the Bishoftu International Airport, located near Bishoftu, about⁣ 28 miles southeast of Addis Ababa, is projected to⁢ handle an amazing 110 million passengers annually ‍upon its completion in 2029. ⁤This capacity far exceeds that of any existing airport in Africa, signaling ethiopia’s intent to become a dominant force in global aviation.

A⁢ Vision for Connectivity and Economic Growth

The ambitious infrastructure project, officially named Bishoftu ⁢International Airport, is a joint venture backed by ethiopian Airlines and supported by the African Development Bank (AfDB). The ⁢”mega airport” will boast four expansive runways and a⁣ state-of-the-art ⁣terminal equipped ⁢with the latest technological⁣ advancements to ensure seamless and ⁣efficient operations for both passengers and ‍cargo. This strategic ⁤development is expected to dramatically expand Ethiopia’s aviation capacity and⁣ bolster its economic influence.

Design Excellence and Environmental responsibility

the design contract for this groundbreaking airport has been awarded to Sidara, a Dubai-based ⁣engineering firm⁤ renowned‍ for‍ its innovative and enduring infrastructure solutions. ⁤Sidara’s⁢ plans place a strong emphasis on eco-friendly practices, ‍incorporating renewable energy sources and advanced waste management systems. This commitment aims to⁤ minimize the environmental footprint of⁤ the airport while maximizing operational efficiency.

Mesfin Tasew, Group ⁣Chief ‍Executive of Ethiopian Airlines, expressed his‍ enthusiasm for the project, stating, “The project will not only enhance connectivity but also drive economic growth and prioritise ⁣environmentally responsible practices in our country and beyond.” ‍He further elaborated that the five-year project, slated for finalization in 2029, will be the largest in Africa, with phase one alone costing at least $6 billion, funded through loans from interested companies.

Tariq al-Qanni, ‍Dar’s‍ Director of operations in Ethiopia, highlighted the ⁢collaborative spirit, saying, ‍”We are privileged to be collaborating with Ethiopian Airlines on this visionary new airport, which will provide vital global air connectivity, accelerate economic growth in Ethiopia, and elevate Ethiopian Airlines into Africa’s most strategic and most competitive aviation group.”

Addressing Capacity Constraints and Future-Proofing Aviation

The new airport is being designed ⁤to accommodate up to 270 ⁤aircraft, a significant upgrade from the current⁤ infrastructure. The plans were initially announced in 2018 as‍ part of Ethiopia’s long-term strategy to expand its aviation capabilities. This move aligns with the rapid expansion of Ethiopian Airlines, which served 17 million passengers in the 2023/2024 financial year⁤ and anticipates this figure to rise to 20 million by 2025.

Currently, Addis ababa Bole Airport serves as Ethiopia’s primary air gateway but ‍faces limitations due to its capacity and high altitude. The new Bishoftu International ⁣Airport ⁣is designed to overcome these challenges, offering modern infrastructure ⁣capable of competing with global aviation ⁢giants such as Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson⁣ and Beijing’s daxing airports.

Upon‍ its completion by 2029, the new hub aims to ‍more than triple Ethiopia’s annual passenger capacity, increasing it from the current 17 million to over⁤ 60 million by 2040. This transformative project underscores Ethiopia’s⁢ commitment to becoming a leading aviation powerhouse in Africa and⁢ beyond.
