Damascus, Syria – In a chilling discovery, Syrian rebels claim to have found approximately 40 bodies bearing signs of torture in a hospital morgue near Damascus.
Mohammed al Hajj, a member of the rebel group, described the scene in a phone call, stating, “I opened the morgue doors with my own hands, it was a horrifying sight: about 40 bodies were piled up, all showing gruesome signs of torture.”
Al Hajj provided the French news agency AFP with dozens of photos and videos he took, depicting bodies with gouged-out eyes and teeth, bloodstains, and severe bruising. One video from Harasta hospital showed a piece of fabric with bones attached, and another showed a body with ribs protruding through the skin.
The bodies were placed in white plastic bags or wrapped in white cloth, with fabric or tape attached bearing numbers and sometimes names.
this discovery comes after Islamist-led rebels overthrew Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on Sunday, ending his family’s over 50-year rule. Bashar al-Assad inherited a brutal network of prisons and detention centers from his father, Hafez al-Assad, were those who deviated from the ruling Baath party line were imprisoned.
It is believed that the bodies found were inmates from the infamous Saidnaya prison near Damascus.
According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), a non-governmental organization, at least 60,000 people have been killed through torture or have died due to horrific prison conditions under the Assad regime.
