The weather pattern involves a cyclonic circulation in the upper atmosphere over the western Gulf of Mexico and another in the middle levels over the center of the country. These systems, combined with atmospheric instability, are expected to produce “puntuales muy fuertes” (very strong localized) rains of 50 to 75 mm in several states, Vanguardia reports.
The most severe rainfall is projected for Sinaloa (north, center, and east), Chihuahua (south and southwest), Durango (west and northwest), Jalisco (south and southeast), Colima, Michoacán (west and northeast), Guanajuato (east), Querétaro (southwest), Veracruz (south), Tabasco (west), Oaxaca (northwest), and Chiapas (northwest), according to the SMN forecast cited by Vanguardia.
Rainfall Forecast for Mexico City and Central States
Mexico City is anticipating strong rains starting at 13:00 on Saturday, August 29, according to Meteored México. The city has already seen significant water accumulation, with Quadratín México reporting a fall of 7.3 million cubic meters of rain, which led to flooding in the Zaragoza area, as reported by Reforma.
The SMN expects “puntuales fuertes” (strong localized) rains of 25 to 50 mm in the capital and surrounding regions. Other areas facing similar intensity include Zacatecas (south and southwest), Aguascalientes, Nayarit (north and east), Hidalgo (east and southwest), Puebla (north, east, and southeast), Tlaxcala, Morelos, the State of Mexico (north, center, and west), and Guerrero (north, center, and east), Vanguardia reports.
While heavy rain dominates the center, the SMN warns of possible hail in the northern, central, and western states of Mexico, according to Vanguardia.
Regional Weather Impacts and Tropical Activity
In the southeast, a low-pressure channel and moist air from the Caribbean Sea are expected to cause very strong rains in western Tabasco and northwestern Chiapas. Strong rains are also forecast for northern and southwestern Campeche, as well as the center, south, and southwest of Yucatán and western Quintana Roo, according to Vanguardia.
Vanguardia also reports that Tropical Wave 14 is approaching the coasts of Quintana Roo. By Thursday, this wave will move across the South Pacific coast of Mexico, maintaining the probability of showers and strong to very strong rains across most of the national territory.
Despite the storms, high temperatures will persist in several regions. The SMN forecasts maximum temperatures between 40 and 45 degrees Celsius in central and southern Sonora, northern Sinaloa, and southwestern Chihuahua, according to Vanguardia.
Specific Forecasts for Northern Mexico
The northern region will experience a mix of extreme heat and intermittent rain. Coahuila, Nuevo León, San Luis Potosí, and Tamaulipas are expected to see intervals of showers between 5 and 25 mm, while Coahuila and Nuevo León may see isolated rains between 0.1 and 5 mm, Vanguardia reports.
For Saltillo, Vanguardia reports a forecast of maximum temperatures of 29 degrees Celsius and minimums of 19 to 20 degrees Celsius from Wednesday through Friday, with a continuing probability of rain.
