Formula 1 Teams Turn to Innovative Cooling Systems to Combat Extreme Heat

Formula 1 drivers face grueling conditions on teh track, and soaring temperatures at races like the Qatar grand Prix have pushed the FIA to find innovative solutions to keep drivers safe and performing at their best. This year, teams were allowed to add an extra vent in the top of the chassis to improve airflow to the cockpit.Though, with temperatures expected to remain high, the FIA is implementing a new, more advanced cooling system for the 2024 season.

American company Chillout Motorsports, known for its cooling technology in NASCAR and Formula E, will be supplying the system. Dubbed the cypher Pro Micro Cooler, itS designed to combat the extreme heat drivers experience inside the cockpit.

The system consists of two main components. The frist is a specialized “shirt” worn under the driver’s racing suit. This shirt features 48 meters of tubing through which a cooling fluid circulates, directly cooling the driver’s body. The second component is a compact cooling unit mounted within the car. This unit chills the fluid that circulates through the driver’s shirt, ensuring a constant supply of cool air.

“the Cypher Pro Micro Cooler is a game-changer for driver safety and comfort,” said a spokesperson for Chillout motorsports. “It allows drivers to focus on racing without being distracted by the intense heat.”

The new cooling system is expected to be a major talking point in the 2024 F1 season, as teams and drivers alike adapt to this innovative technology.

formula 1 Teams Turn to Innovative Cooling systems to Combat Extreme Heat

As temperatures soar on race tracks around the world, Formula 1 teams are turning to cutting-edge cooling technology to keep drivers safe and performing at their peak.

One such innovation is a new cooling shirt system developed by Chillout Motorsports. The system, set to debut in Formula 1 in 2024, aims to keep drivers cool in extreme heat without compromising their performance.

“The trick is to get the system working as efficiently as possible, which is around 15°C,” said Charles Kline, founder of Chillout Motorsports. “It’s very cold, feels amazing, but it’s just above the point where your body stops blood flow to the skin.”

The system consists of a specialized cooling shirt worn by the driver and a compact box that houses the cooling unit. The shirt is fitted with lightweight, non-flammable tubes that circulate a chilled fluid mixture, keeping the driver’s core temperature down.

The cooling box, containing a microcompressor, evaporator, and condenser unit, will be mounted within the car.

Chillout Motorsports faced several challenges in developing the system. The cooling shirt needed to be lightweight, agreeable, and able to effectively circulate the cooling fluid while meeting strict fire safety regulations. The cooling box also presented a challenge, as it had to be compact enough to fit within the limited space available in a Formula 1 car.

The FIA, Formula 1’s governing body, will mandate the use of the cooling system when air temperatures exceed 30.5°C. Teams will be notified at least 24 hours before a race or sprint race if the system is required.

While the system itself is relatively lightweight, it will add 5 kg to the car’s minimum weight, bringing it to 805 kg. Currently, the system is powered by an external battery pack, but from 2026 onwards, it will be integrated into the car’s own electrical systems.

The introduction of this innovative cooling technology highlights the ongoing commitment of Formula 1 to driver safety and performance in the face of increasingly challenging environmental conditions.

F1 Drivers to Get High-Tech Cooling for Scorching Races

Formula 1 drivers will be sporting a new, high-tech cooling system next season, designed to combat the extreme heat they face on the track.

The FIA, Formula 1’s governing body, is taking action to protect drivers from soaring temperatures, notably at races like the Qatar Grand prix. While teams were allowed to add an extra vent in the chassis this year to improve airflow, the FIA is implementing a more advanced solution for the 2024 season.

American company Chillout Motorsports, known for its cooling technology in NASCAR and Formula E, will be supplying the system.Dubbed the Cypher Pro Micro Cooler, it’s designed to directly cool drivers inside the cockpit.

How the Cypher Pro Micro Cooler Works

the system consists of two main components:

  1. Cooling Shirt: A specialized “shirt” worn under the driver’s racing suit. This shirt features 48 meters of tubing through which a cooling fluid circulates, directly cooling the driver’s body.
  1. Cooling Unit: A compact unit mounted within the car. This unit chills the fluid that circulates through the driver’s shirt, ensuring a constant supply of cool air.

The new cooling system is a significant step forward in driver safety and performance. With temperatures expected to remain high at many races, the Cypher pro Micro Cooler will help ensure drivers can stay focused and perform at their best, even in the most challenging conditions.

To combat the heat and enhance driver safety and performance, chillout Motorsports has developed the Cypher pro micro Cooler,a revolutionary cooling system integrated into drivers’ suits.

“The trick is to get the system working as efficiently as possible, which is around 15°C,” said Charles Kline, founder of Chillout motorsports. “It’s very cold, feels amazing, but it’s just above the point where your body stops blood flow to the skin.”

Challenges and Benefits

Developing the Cypher Pro Micro Cooler presented several hurdles. The cooling shirt needed to be lightweight, comfortable, and capable of effectively circulating the cooling fluid while adhering to strict fire safety regulations.

Chillout Motorsports successfully overcame these challenges, creating a system that promises to significantly enhance driver safety and performance in extreme heat.

The Cypher Pro micro Cooler represents a notable advancement in driver safety and comfort, allowing them to focus on performance even in the most demanding conditions.
