49ers Defense Revamp: Saleh’s Vision and Bryce Huff Acquisition
The San Francisco 49ers are betting big on defensive coordinator Robert Saleh’s vision, making significant changes to their defensive unit this offseason. The most recent move: acquiring defensive end Bryce Huff.
Despite parting ways with key veterans, the 49ers are confident that Saleh’s scheme and player development skills will fill those gaps. This confidence was evident in the recent draft, where the team used their first five picks on defensive players.
Saleh’s familiarity with the 49ers and coach Kyle Shanahan, combined with the team’s willingness to let him reshape a defense that struggled statistically last season, made his return an easy decision. Saleh emphasized the organization’s collaborative approach to finding players.
the acquisition of Huff, pending completion after June 1, highlights Saleh’s influence. Huff had his best season under Saleh with the New York Jets in 2023, recording 10 sacks and a league-leading 21.8% pressure rate. After signing with the Philadelphia Eagles, Huff’s production dipped, managing only 2.5 sacks.
The 49ers hope Saleh can revitalize Huff’s career. Since Dee Ford’s injury in 2020, the team has sought a consistent pass-rushing partner for Nick Bosa. The team also drafted Mykel Williams with the 11th pick.
Beyond Huff, Saleh’s influence extends to the hiring of special teams coordinator Brant Boyer and the addition of linebacker Chazz Surratt. Saleh has a track record of developing talent, turning Fred Warner and Dre Greenlaw into a top linebacker duo during his first stint with San Francisco. In New York, he helped D.J. Reed and Quincy Williams exceed expectations.
Now, Saleh and his staff are tasked with integrating the new players alongside cornerstones like Bosa, Warner, and Deommodore Lenoir. The 49ers are optimistic that Saleh’s return will quickly improve the defense.
“It’s nice hearing his voice in there, how he sees defense now, how he sees the NFL now,” Shanahan said.
