Updated May 27,2025
The San Francisco 49ers have commenced Organized Team activities (OTAs) this week, with a keen eye on solidifying their defensive line and fostering team chemistry. These voluntary sessions, which veteran George Kittle playfully calls “Optional Training Activities,” mark a crucial phase in the team’s planning for the upcoming season.
Kittle emphasized the positive atmosphere surrounding the team during this period. He noted that the absence of immediate game pressure allows for a unique bonding experience. This year marks his frist full participation in OTAs at the 49ers’ headquarters since 2019, having previously trained at his offseason home near Nashville.
With 11-on-11 drills now permitted, the focus shifts to evaluating player integration and performance. While contact remains limited until training camp in late July, these sessions provide valuable insights into the team’s progress. The 49ers plan to utilize six of their ten allotted OTA days.
One of the primary areas of focus is the defensive line rotation. The unit has undergone significant changes, making it essential to observe how newcomers blend with established players like Nick Bosa. The performance of rookies and veterans alike will be closely monitored.
The 49ers also aim to assess the connection between quarterback Brock Purdy and his receiving corps. With Brandon Aiyuk sidelined for ACL rehab, opportunities arise for other receivers to step up and build rapport with Purdy. ricky Pearsall, Jacob Cowing, and newcomer Demarcus Robinson are among those looking to make an impact.
The running back situation also warrants attention. With Christian McCaffrey possibly facing paternity leave, backups like Isaac Guerendo, Jordan James, and Corey Kiner will need to demonstrate their receiving and pass-protection abilities.
Mac Jones, the new understudy to Brock Purdy, will participate in his first 49ers OTA session. This comes four years after the team opted for Trey Lance over him in the draft.
“Besides being on a really good, winning team late in the season and going to the playoffs, one of the best vibes is during the spring for football… Everyone is having a good time. There’s such grate energy in the building.”
What’s next
The 49ers will continue OTAs, evaluating player performance and team cohesion. The mandatory minicamp in June will provide further insights before training camp commences in late July.
