The San Francisco 49ers and quarterback brock Purdy finalized a five-year, $265 million contract extension this offseason, securing the franchise quarterback’s future with the team. However, the deal has sparked debate, with some questioning whether the 49ers overpaid.

T.J. Houshmandzadeh, a former NFL wide receiver who helps train 49ers receiver Brandon Aiyuk, recently voiced his opinion that San Francisco overspent on Purdy. This criticism adds to the ongoing discussion surrounding the quarterback’s value.
Houshmandzadeh believes the San Francisco 49ers’ investment was too high, suggesting a more appropriate figure would have been $47 million annually. He cited purdy’s performance against playoff teams in 2024 as justification.
“I believe they did overpay for Brock Purdy,” Houshmandzadeh said. “I would have given Brock Purdy $47 million a year. That would have been the most I’m giving him. We needed you last year. You went 1-6 against playoff teams. We had guys hurt — Christian McCaffrey was out, Trent williams was out, Brandon Aiyuk got hurt — and you couldn’t really get it done.”
During the 2024 season, Purdy’s numbers saw a slight decrease compared to the previous year. He completed 65.9% of his passes for 3,864 yards, with 20 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. He also rushed for 323 yards and five touchdowns. In 2023, he had 4,280 passing yards, 31 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions, completing 69.4% of his passes.
