49ers Sign Kicker Eddy Pineiro to 4-Year, $17M Extension
SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The San Francisco 49ers have secured the future of their kicking game, agreeing to a four-year contract extension with Eddy Piñeiro, , according to multiple reports.
The deal is worth $17 million, with $10 million guaranteed, as confirmed by Piñeiro’s agents, Drew Rosenhaus and Robert Bailey, to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The extension prevents Piñeiro from testing free agency when the negotiating window opens .
Piñeiro joined the 49ers after being signed following Week 1 of the season, quickly establishing himself as a reliable option at a position that had been a source of inconsistency for the team since they drafted Jake Moody in . The 49ers waived Moody after a difficult start to the season.
In , Piñeiro converted 28 of 29 field goal attempts, a 96.6% success rate that led the NFL. He also made six field goals from 50 yards or more. His only miss came from 64 yards against the Indianapolis Colts in Week 16.
“Eddy was obviously fantastic,” 49ers General Manager John Lynch said last month at the NFL combine. “I don’t know if a guy could have come in and done any better.”
Piñeiro’s performance provided stability at kicker, a need for the 49ers after the departure of Robbie Gould following the season. He also made all three field goal attempts in the playoffs, including a 56-yarder in a divisional round loss to the Seattle Seahawks.
Throughout his career, Piñeiro has made 139 of 155 field goal attempts (89.7%) and 150 of 164 extra points (91.5%). The new contract ranks 13th highest in average annual value for a kicker in the NFL.
The 49ers’ commitment to Piñeiro signals a clear intention to maintain consistency in a crucial special teams role as they continue to contend for championships. The team had been searching for a reliable kicker since investing a third-round draft pick in Moody, and Piñeiro’s arrival and subsequent success have provided a solution.
