Chef Emily Susman, author of Get Stuffed, is sharing her expertise for throwing the perfect Fourth of July bash. Celebrating the launch of her Emma claire’s Kitchen [Not So] Simple Spices, Susman emphasizes uncomplicated summer dishes and creating a welcoming atmosphere.
Susman’s new spice blends-Fiesta, Zen, and Mediterranean-aim to streamline seasoning for summer barbecues. “The Fiesta Blend, Zen Blend, and Mediterranean Blend are perfect for summer BBQs and 4th of July celebrations as they take the guesswork out of seasoning,” Susman said. She added that the blends start with her original mix of salt,pepper,garlic powder,and dry mustard,elevated with clean ingredients.
These spices can enhance roasted vegetables, grilled meats, soups, salads, and snacks. Susman suggests using the Fiesta Blend on grilled corn or in burgers for a Tex-Mex flavor. The Zen Blend complements Asian-inspired sides like grilled bok choy, while the mediterranean Blend shines on lamb kabobs or cucumber-tomato salad. Her Original Blend is her secret for perfect hamburgers and tater tots.
Beyond the menu, Susman recommends special touches to elevate the party. “For the 4th of July, I love blending casual comfort with elevated details,” Susman said. She suggests creating a warm, welcoming atmosphere with string lights, throw blankets, citronella candles, simple floral arrangements, and a curated playlist.
