A 5.4-magnitude earthquake struck off the east coast of Honshu, Japan, on Tuesday, April 22, 2026, at 1844 GMT, according to the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences.

The epicenter was located at 40.21 degrees north latitude and 143.02 degrees east longitude, with a depth of 40.7 kilometers.

The quake was reported by the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC) and confirmed by multiple international monitoring agencies, including the GFZ, which issued the initial assessment.

No immediate reports of casualties or significant damage have been confirmed following the tremor, which occurred in a seismically active region off Japan’s Pacific coast.

Japan lies along the Pacific Ring of Fire, where several tectonic plates converge, making it prone to frequent seismic activity. The area near the epicenter has experienced similar quakes in recent years, including a 5.5-magnitude event off the east coast of Honshu in July 2024 and a 5.4-magnitude quake near the west coast in January 2024.

Authorities in Japan have not issued tsunami warnings following this event, as the quake’s magnitude and depth are generally below the threshold that typically triggers such alerts for offshore seismic activity.

The GFZ continues to monitor the situation and will provide updates if any significant changes occur in seismic activity or if aftershocks are detected in the region.
