Authorities in Washington County, Oregon, are investigating the deaths of five people and several domestic animals following an early morning fire at a rural property outside Forest Grove, according to statements released by the Washington County Sheriff’s Office. Washington County deputies responded at 5:27 a.m. on Aug. 22, 2026, to assist the Forest Grove Fire Department with a reported vehicle fire in an unincorporated rural area, as reported by KPTV. Responders arriving at the heavily vegetated property discovered human remains, leading officials to launch a full homicide probe.

Investigation Details and Suspect Status

During a press conference, a spokesperson for the Sheriff’s Office confirmed that investigators are treating the case as a quintuple homicide, noting that they do not believe the incident was a random act of violence. Detectives later identified a suspect in the case as 36-year-old Benjamin Parker. Authorities stated that Parker was found dead in Enumclaw, Washington, and that investigators believe he took his own life. Investigators have not yet publicly released the ages or genders of the five victims, nor have they specified the types of domestic animals found dead at the scene. Officials are still working to formally identify the victims and notify their next of kin before releasing further details.

Logistical Challenges at the Crime Scene

Washington County Sheriff Caprice Massey described the investigation as exceptionally challenging. Massey stated that in her 22 years with the agency, she had not witnessed a scene of this complexity. This is being investigated as a quintuple homicide. Washington County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Detective Shannon Wilde with the sheriff’s office emphasized the difficulties posed by the multi-victim scene during an update to reporters, explaining that managing such an active investigation involves numerous moving parts. The Washington County Sheriff’s Office detective unit is leading the inquiry with support from the Washington County Major Crimes Team, state forensics units, K-9 teams, and county animal services. Law enforcement officials have urged anyone with information regarding the residence, its occupants, or their associates to contact the Washington County non-emergency dispatch line at 503-629-0111, referencing case number 50-26-11866.
