5 Foods That May Worsen Menopausal Symptoms

Navigating menopause can bring a range of challenges and while hormone fluctuations are the primary driver of symptoms like hot flashes, night sweats, and mood swings, diet plays a surprisingly significant role. Avoiding certain foods may help reduce the severity of these symptoms and support overall health during this life transition.

1. Ultra-Processed Foods

Foods heavily processed with added saturated fats, sodium, sugars, and preservatives can contribute to water retention and bloating, a common complaint during menopause. This category includes items like chips, frozen meals, packaged snacks, and breakfast bars. These foods often lack the essential nutrients – fiber, protein, vitamins, and minerals – that support overall well-being.

“The difficulty with ultra-processed foods is that they can often raise inflammation in the body, which is already an issue during menopause,” says Dr. Rachael Lopez, M.D., an OB/GYN. “That’s because estrogen is declining at this time, and that particular hormone plays a major role in keeping inflammation in check.”

When cravings strike, opting for nutritious alternatives like string cheese, carrots with hummus, or whole-grain crackers with peanut butter can satisfy hunger without exacerbating symptoms. Combining protein with fiber-rich carbohydrates can also promote a feeling of fullness.

2. Spicy Foods

For those prone to hot flashes, spicy foods can be a trigger. Certain spices may induce sweating, flushing, and other sensations associated with hot flashes. While individual tolerance varies, it’s worth noting the potential connection.

If you enjoy flavor, consider using spices that add zest without the heat, such as cumin, curry, turmeric, and basil. These can enhance meals without potentially worsening menopausal symptoms.

3. Fast Food

The convenience of fast food often comes at a cost. These meals typically contain higher amounts of saturated fat and sodium. A diet high in saturated fat can increase the risk of heart disease, a concern that rises for women after menopause.

fast food tends to contribute to weight gain, which can exacerbate menopause symptoms. “These foods also tend to promote weight gain, which can exacerbate menopause symptoms as well,” says Amy Jamieson-Petonic, RD, a nutritionist and exercise physiologist.

Planning ahead with quick, nutritious options – freezing leftovers or packing a lunch – can help avoid the temptation of fast food. If a convenient meal is necessary, choose items with lean protein and fiber, such as grilled chicken sandwiches on whole-grain bread, salads, and fruit.

4. Alcohol

Alcohol consumption during menopause warrants consideration. Some women find that alcohol increases their susceptibility to hot flashes. While research on the direct link between alcohol and menopausal symptoms is mixed, it’s important to be mindful of potential effects.

Studies have also shown that even moderate alcohol consumption – as little as one drink per day – is associated with an increased risk of breast cancer in both pre- and postmenopausal women. General health guidelines recommend limiting alcohol intake for overall well-being.

“I tell women to listen to their bodies,” Jamieson-Petonic says. “If alcohol aggravates their menopause symptoms, they should try to avoid it.” If you choose to drink, a white wine spritzer with fruit or certain beers and malt liquors, which tend to have lower alcohol content, may be preferable.

5. Fatty Meats

Beyond their saturated fat content, which can impact heart health and weight, fatty meats may also influence mood. Research suggests that high-fat diets can disrupt the function of the hypothalamus gland in the brain, potentially suppressing serotonin production.

“When serotonin drops, we feel angry, grumpy, and irritable,” Jamieson-Petonic explains. Here’s particularly relevant during menopause, as declining estrogen levels also affect serotonin levels, potentially worsening mood swings.

Choosing leaner protein sources like chicken, turkey, and fish is a healthier alternative. A diet rich in plant-based foods (vegetables, fruits, whole grains) and healthy fats from nuts and seeds may also help reduce hot flashes and other menopause symptoms.

Menopause is a natural transition, and dietary adjustments can be a powerful tool for managing symptoms and promoting overall health. By being mindful of food choices, women can navigate this phase of life with greater comfort and well-being. It’s always best to discuss individual dietary needs and concerns with a healthcare professional.
