Jeremy London, a U.S.-based neurosurgeon residing in Savannah, Georgia, has identified five habits that accelerate aging and should be avoided to promote longevity, according to statements reported by The Sun.
Speaking to the British tabloid, Dr. London outlined the factors he says have been proven to speed up the aging process, beginning with smoking, which he described as affecting nearly every organ system in the body, even in small amounts.
The second habit on his list is a sedentary lifestyle, particularly prolonged sitting during work hours, which he said disrupts glucose metabolism and mitochondrial function, noting that the human body is designed for movement.
Third, Dr. London cited obesity, emphasizing that it is not merely about weight on a scale but about fat distribution, especially abdominal or visceral fat, which is a known contributor to chronic diseases.
The fourth factor is chronic stress, defined as persistent high-level stress from situations such as job loss, a loved one’s long-term illness, financial strain, or relationship difficulties, which leads to elevated cortisol and other stress hormones that negatively impact overall health.
Finally, he highlighted lack of sleep as a critical issue, stating that sleep is essential for bodily repair and recovery, and inadequate rest increases the risk of disease.
