5 Star Wars Legends Characters Disney Should Leave in the Past

5 Star Wars Legends Characters Disney Should Leave in the Past

January 22, 2025 Catherine Williams - Chief Editor Entertainment

Title: Why Some Beloved Star Wars Legends Characters Should Stay in the Past

In the vast galaxy of Star Wars, fans have been treated to a myriad of characters, many of whom have left an indelible mark on our hearts. However, with Disney’s acquisition of the franchise, the old Expanded Universe was rebranded as ‘Legends,’ leaving some beloved characters in the realm of what-could-have-been. While there’s a long list of characters fans would love to see in live-action, some Legends favorites might be better off staying where they are.

Mara Jade-Skywalker: Too Complex for Current Canon

Mara Jade, introduced in Timothy Zahn’s "Star Wars: Heir to the Empire," is a prime example. A former Emperor’s Hand turned Jedi, her complex arc intertwined with Luke, Leia, and Han. Her growth and eventual marriage to Luke made her a fan favorite. But Mara’s story is deeply rooted in the post-Return of the Jedi era, which Disney has largely ignored. Bringing her into the current canon would require retconning her history and relationships, potentially diluting her character. It’s a challenge Disney hasn’t shown it can handle, as evidenced by the lackluster adaptation of Grand Admiral Thrawn.

Talon Karrde: A Smuggler Too Clever for His Own Good

Talon Karrde, also from "Heir to the Empire," is another character who might be too complex for Disney’s canon. A smuggler with a heart of gold, Karrde’s neutral stance and criminal past make him a challenging character to write. His intelligence and shrewdness, seen in his dealings with both the Empire and the New Republic, require a delicate balance that Disney has yet to master. Karrde’s character arc is also deeply tied to the Expanded Universe, making it difficult to integrate him into the current continuity.

Jacen Solo: A Fallen Jedi Too Subtle for Disney

Jacen Solo, introduced in "Star Wars: The Last Command," is one of the most fully realized characters in Legends. His fall to the dark side was a delicate balancing act, born of his life of conflict and his pacifistic ways being challenged by the bloody realities of life. Disney’s attempt to recreate this arc with Kylo Ren fell flat, proving they haven’t mastered the subtlety required for such a character. If they can’t get a character as simple as Kylo Ren right, there’s no hope for Jacen.

Darth Bane: A Sith Too Powerful for Disney’s Canon

Darth Bane, introduced in the short story "Bane of the Sith" from "Star Wars Gamer," is another character whose power and complexity might be too much for Disney. His story, told in Drew Karpshyn’s trilogy, is one of the best in Legends. Bane’s rule of two and his role in shaping the Sith into the Empire’s secret weapon are too significant to be ignored, yet too complex for Disney’s current canon. Karpshyn’s work on Bane is unparalleled, and Disney hasn’t shown they can match his level of storytelling.

Kyp Durron: A Jedi Too Human for Disney’s Standards

Kyp Durron, from Kevin J. Anderson’s "Jedi Academy" trilogy, is a character whose arc took years to come to fruition. He grew from a broken kid to a powerful Jedi Master who had come to terms with the pain that drove him to evil for a short time. His human flaws and growth are what make him such a compelling character. However, Disney’s canon has been criticized for lacking depth and nuance, making Kyp’s complex arc a challenge they haven’t shown they can handle.

In conclusion, while there are many characters fans would love to see in live-action, some Legends favorites might be better off staying where they are. Their complex arcs, deep ties to the Expanded Universe, and the challenges they pose to Disney’s current storytelling capabilities make them potential casualties in the ongoing effort to integrate Legends into the canon. For now, it might be best to let these characters remain in the realm of ‘what could have been.’

ultimately, the decision of ⁢which Legends characters deserve a place in canon rests on Disney’s creative vision. While the temptation to bring back beloved ⁢figures is strong, respecting the integrity and complexity of characters‍ like Mara Jade and talon ⁣Karrde⁣ necessitates careful⁢ consideration. Perhaps,⁤ preserving them‍ within the Legends continuity allows fans to cherish‌ their stories ‌untouched, ensuring that their legacy remains vibrant and‌ unburdened by the complexities of canon integration. After all, ⁤sometimes, letting certain stories⁤ remain in the annals of history allows them to ⁣shine even brighter, reminding⁣ us⁣ that the vast galaxy ‌of Star Wars ‍holds endless possibilities, both realized‍ and imagined.

While nostalgia beckoned, these Legends characters exemplify why respecting established narratives can lead to a healthier, more captivating canon. Their complexities, intertwining arcs, and unique trajectories, crafted across decades of Expanded Universe storytelling, are perhaps irreplaceable.Tampering with those narratives for a forced fit with Disney’s current canon could ultimately dilute the very essence of what makes these characters so compelling.

Instead, cherishing these legends within the beloved realm of ‘Legends’ allows fans to engage with their captivating stories unhindered. There’s comfort in knowing some narratives exist undisturbed, their strength preserved, awaiting rediscovery, and continuing to inspire fan engagement in new and exciting ways, separate yet important within the wider tapestry of the Star Wars saga.
