East Brookfield Animal Shelter Takes in 52 Cats,Seeks Community Support

Second Chance Animal Services in East ‍Brookfield,MA,is now caring for 52 ‍cats after a local resident,facing medical challenges,surrendered them. The cats, though unvaccinated and not spayed or neutered, were reportedly ‍well-cared for.

Danielle Bowes, foster coordinator and adoption counselor ‍at Second Chance, noted the cats are “remarkably well-socialized,” wiht manny approaching the cage front. A mother cat and her seven kittens are already in a foster home.

Dr. Jackie Celmer, the shelter veterinarian, and her team are providing medical exams, updating vaccinations, and identifying cats needing further treatment. Underweight kittens ⁤and⁤ a pregnant cat are heading to foster care, while a dozen cats are being treated for upper respiratory infections.Spay and neuter surgeries are planned for the remaining cats.

Lindsay Doray, chief advancement officer, said the medical care is expected to exceed $18,000.”With this many cats, the medical care quickly adds up,” doray said. The costs include surgeries, vaccines, medication, foster care, food, and staff support. The organization is asking for donations to help cover expenses and encourages community members to adopt the cats once⁣ they are ready.

“we certainly know this pet owner had the best of intentions,” Doray said.“Sometimes compassion alone isn’t enough to keep up with the needs of so many animals. That’s where ⁤Second Chance steps in, thanks to the generosity of our supporters.”
