60 Minutes Inside CECOT: Weiss’s Shelved Story Revealed
“60 Minutes” Segment on Venezuelan Migrants Airs After Delay
The “60 Minutes” story detailing the Trump administration’s handling of Venezuelan migrants deported to a harsh El Salvador prison, known as CECOT, aired on January 19, 2026. The segment’s broadcast followed a delay and internal conflict at CBS News.
Originally scheduled for December 21, 2025, the story was pulled the day before air by CBS News Editor in Chief Bari Weiss. Weiss cited the need for additional reporting, specifically a response from the White House,as the reason for the postponement.
Sharyn Alfonsi, the “60 Minutes” correspondent who reported the piece, reportedly protested Weiss’s decision, alleging political motivation in an email to colleagues.
Weiss’s appointment in October 2025 by Paramount Chief Executive David Ellison has been viewed by some CBS News insiders as an attempt to improve relations with the Trump administration. This is particularly relevant as Paramount pursues the acquisition of Warner Bros. discovery and seeks a favorable regulatory outcome.
CBS News stated its commitment to airing the segment once it was ready. “CBS News leadership has always been committed to airing the 60 MINUTES CECOT piece as soon as it was ready,” the network said in a statement. “Tonight, viewers get to see it, along with other critically important stories, all of which speak to CBS News’ independence and the power of our storytelling.”
Weiss maintained that Alfonsi’s report required further development, including comments from a White House spokesperson. The aired version included these additional elements.
