60-Year-Old Jailed for Grievous Bodily Harm in Disturbing Domestic Violence Case
Taylor, aged 60, appeared in Hamilton District Court for sentencing on a charge of injuring with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. He knew prison was the only outcome.
On March 7, just before 10:30 PM, Taylor and the victim had a makeshift campsite near Riverbank Lane. While the victim sat on a tiered platform, Taylor approached her and began arguing about their relationship. He pushed her off the platform, dragged her around, and struck her in the head.
While the victim lay on the ground, Taylor kicked her in the head and punched her multiple times. He stood over her, holding her down, and continued to hit her. When she tried to rise, he kicked her down again before sitting on a nearby seat.
After the assault, he pulled her around and then stomped on her three times. Eventually, the woman stood up, and they walked toward Victoria St, where bystanders had called the police.
When found outside a restaurant, Taylor told police, “f* this b**, just lock me up.” Initially, he claimed the victim fell down some stairs but later admitted he had been there and that he had hit her. He expressed remorse in an interview, saying he was sorry and that “that’s just the way love goes sometimes.”
Police prosecutor Sergeant Stephen Leet noted Taylor’s remorse letter. He acknowledged that Taylor has feelings for the victim but stressed that violence is not love. He requested a minimal consideration of Taylor’s alcohol and drug issues during sentencing.
Judge Denise Clark responded, stating that his behavior was unacceptable. She recognized his troubled upbringing after losing both parents at a young age. She also pointed out his severe alcohol addiction and how it led to harmful actions.
Ultimately, Judge Clark sentenced Taylor to 22 months in prison for his actions.
