Firefighters have fully contained and are mopping up a wildfire that burned just east of Wellington in Larimer County, Colorado, officials confirmed on April 20, 2026.

The blaze, designated the 64 Fire, was reported earlier in the day and prompted mandatory evacuations for residents living along County Road N and surrounding areas due to rapid spread driven by dry conditions and gusty winds.

By 4:15 p.m. Local time, incident commanders announced the fire was 100 percent contained, with crews transitioning to suppression repair and hotspot monitoring to prevent rekindling.

No structures were reported destroyed, and there were no injuries among civilians or emergency personnel, according to the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office and the Larimer County Emergency Management Agency.

Evacuation orders were lifted later in the evening as safety assessments confirmed the threat to homes and infrastructure had passed. Residents were allowed to return under a phased re-entry plan coordinated with local authorities.

The cause of the 64 Fire remains under investigation. Officials have not released details about potential ignition sources but confirmed the fire originated in grasslands and light timber east of Wellington before moving toward populated corridors.

Over 120 firefighters from multiple agencies, including Larimer County Fire Department, Wellington Fire Protection District, and state wildland crews, responded to the incident. Air support included helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft conducting water and retardant drops during peak activity.

Weather conditions at the time included low humidity, temperatures in the mid-70s Fahrenheit, and sustained winds of 15 to 25 mph with higher gusts, which initially challenged containment efforts.

Larimer County officials urged residents to remain vigilant during the ongoing fire season, noting that dry fuels and above-average temperatures continue to elevate wildfire risk across northern Colorado.

As of the latest update, all evacuation centers have been closed, and roadways previously affected by traffic closures, including portions of County Road N and State Highway 1, have reopened to normal traffic.
