An 83-meter-long giant fish geoglyph located in Arizona dates back between 6,500 and 7,300 years, according to dating results published in September 2026 by researchers from the University of Witwatersrand and Arizona State University. Federal border construction machinery scraped a 15-meter path directly through the ancient earthwork on April 23, 2026, causing irreversible damage to a site situated on the ancestral territory of the Tohono O’odham nation.

Dating the Las Playas Intaglio in the Sonoran Desert

Geologists collected rock varnish samples from the stones of the engraving in 1979, initially estimating the Las Playas intaglio to be roughly 1,000 years old. Applying modern rock varnish microlamination techniques, researchers pushed the true age of the artwork back to between 6,500 and 7,300 years old. David Whitley, one of the study’s authors, described the damage inflicted on such an ancient site as a great misfortune.

Border wall construction damages ancient cultural site in southern Arizona

The newly established timeline places the Arizona engraving roughly 2,000 years before the construction of Egypt’s first pyramid. Stonehenge was built about 1,500 years later, while Peru’s famous Nazca lines appeared approximately 4,000 years after the creation of the Las Playas intaglio. Its ancient creators made the design by clearing dark surface stones to reveal the lighter earth underneath, according to an article published in The SAA Archaeological Record.

Federal Border Construction Damages the Heritage Site

Federal subcontractors preparing land for a second border wall in Arizona on April 23, 2026, operated heavy machinery that scraped a 15-meter strip right through the ancient engraving within the Cabeza Prieta refuge. A customs spokesperson acknowledged that the subcontractor unintentionally damaged the tracé, while the agency assured the public that the remaining portion of the artwork had been secured with promises of strengthened protocols. Commissioner Rodney Scott initiated discussions with tribal leaders following the incident.

Legal Challenges Expand Along the Border

The border wall conflict has spread into Texas, where a Lipan Apache tribal association and an outdoor company filed a lawsuit invoking the Religious Freedom Restoration Act to defend access to their places of worship. A judge subsequently ordered a temporary halt to construction in Big Bend park. Meanwhile, work continues on other stretches of the 3,145-kilometer international border.
