Communities across the Midwest began cleanup efforts on Saturday after a severe weather outbreak produced at least 66 tornado reports across multiple states on Friday, according to the National Weather Service.

The storms, which moved through Illinois, Indiana, and other Midwestern states, caused widespread damage including downed trees, damaged roofs, and destroyed outbuildings. In Lena, Illinois, aerial imagery showed significant destruction in residential areas, with homes damaged and debris scattered across yards and roads.

Emergency crews and volunteers mobilized quickly in affected areas to assess damage, clear roads, and assist residents. Local officials urged caution due to downed power lines and unstable structures, particularly in rural communities where access was limited by fallen trees and debris.

The National Weather Service confirmed that storm surveys were underway to verify tornado touchdowns and rate their intensity using the Enhanced Fujita scale. Preliminary reports indicated several strong tornadoes, though final classifications were pending completion of damage assessments.

Residents in impacted areas reported taking shelter in basements and interior rooms as warnings were issued Friday afternoon and evening. While no fatalities were immediately reported in the initial assessments, several injuries were documented, primarily from flying debris and structural damage.

Utility companies worked to restore power to thousands of customers who lost electricity during the storms. Crews faced challenging conditions as they repaired downed lines and replaced damaged poles in scattered locations across the affected region.

State emergency management agencies coordinated with local governments to provide resources and support. Shelters were opened in some communities to assist displaced residents, and donations of water, food, and cleaning supplies were being collected at designated drop-off points.

Meteorologists noted that the outbreak was part of a broader pattern of active spring weather across the central United States, driven by strong wind shear and unstable air masses. They urged residents to remain vigilant as additional severe weather remained possible in the coming days.

Cleanup operations were expected to continue through the weekend and into early next week, with officials emphasizing safety during debris removal and urging residents to wear protective gear and avoid entering damaged structures until they were deemed safe.
