A series of tragic road incidents across Ireland over the weekend have resulted in the deaths of seven people and left several others injured, authorities reported Sunday. The crashes occurred in counties Armagh, Meath, Waterford, and Galway, casting a somber shadow over the country.
In County Armagh, three people – a 31-year-old man, a 48-year-old man, and a 23-year-old woman – were killed in a three-vehicle collision on the Armagh Road after 10:00 PM Saturday night. According to the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI), the crash involved a red BMW, a grey Volkswagen, and a white Audi. Four other individuals sustained injuries, with three still receiving treatment as of Sunday afternoon. The Armagh Road remained closed Sunday for investigation.
“At around 10.20pm, Police received a report of a three-vehicle collision… Officers attended, along with colleagues from other emergency services, however, two men, aged 31 and 48, and a woman, aged 23, were sadly pronounced deceased at the scene,” Assistant Chief Constable Davy Beck stated.
SDLP Armagh councillor Thomas O’Hanlon expressed deep sorrow, stating that three families and their communities had been “plunged into deep grief.” He added, “There are truly no words that can ease such pain, other than to offer our thoughts and prayers at this incredibly difficult time.”
Further south, in County Meath, a 16-year-old girl died after being struck by a car on the Slane Road in Navan Saturday evening. Gardaí reported that the driver failed to remain at the scene. The teenager was transported to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda, where she was pronounced dead. A man in his 20s was later arrested in connection with the incident, and a vehicle was seized for forensic examination. He is currently being held under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.
“The pedestrian, a 16-year-old female, was treated at the scene before being transferred to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda, where she was later pronounced deceased,” Gardaí said in a statement.
In County Galway, an elderly woman in her 80s died in a single-vehicle crash at Eyrecourt Saturday night. Gardaí and emergency services responded to the incident at Rooaun around 8:15 PM. The woman, the sole occupant of the car, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her remains were taken to Portiuncula Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
Authorities are appealing for information from anyone who may have been travelling in the area between 7:30 PM and 8:30 PM and may have relevant camera footage.
Earlier in the weekend, a man and a woman, both in their 40s, were killed in a collision in County Waterford. The incident occurred on the Tramore Road at approximately midday Saturday, involving a car and a van. A man in his 50s and a juvenile male travelling in the van were taken to University Hospital Waterford for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
These latest tragedies bring the total number of road deaths in the Republic of Ireland to 113 so far this year, according to reports.
