Fruit is a staple of a balanced diet; it is rich in essential vitamins and minerals and generally low in calories. However, Diabetes.co.uk, a website providing news, information and resources on diabetes, has warned that some fruits are dangerous for diabetics due to their high glycemic index.

Diabetes comes in two forms: type 1 and type 2. Type 1 occurs when the body destroys the insulin-producing cells that regulate blood sugar levels. Type 2 diabetes, the most common form, is often associated with obesity or insufficient physical activity.

A variety of fruits should be included in the diet of people with diabetes, but health experts warn to avoid fruits with a high glycemic index (GI). The GI is a rating system that indicates how quickly carbohydrate-containing foods affect blood sugar levels when consumed alone.

High glycemic foods break down very quickly, causing blood sugar levels to rise rapidly. For diabetic patients, a sudden increase in blood sugar levels is called a blood sugar spike.

High-glycemic fruits that diabetics should avoid include bananas, oranges, mangoes, grapes, raisins, dates and pears. On the other hand, low glycemic index foods such as plums, berries, kiwis and grapefruit are good.

Because low-GI foods break down more slowly, they are less likely to cause a rapid rise in blood sugar levels than high-GI foods. Therefore, it is more useful for keeping blood sugar levels stable. Choosing low-GI foods over high-GI foods will help you feel satisfied for a longer period of time and reduce the likelihood of feeling hungry before your next meal.

The UK’s National Health Service (NHS) advises that low glycemic index foods are beneficial for people with diabetes, but it is also important to maintain a balanced diet. Foods with a high GI are not necessarily harmful, and not all foods with a low GI are healthy. For example, watermelon and sometimes parsnip are high-glycemic foods, while chocolate cake has a low glycemic index.
