Dolly Parton made her feature film debut in the workplace comedy 9 to 5, released in December 1980, starring alongside Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin, according to historical studio records. Directed by Colin Higgins, the film follows three office workers who concoct an elaborate scheme to turn the tables on their egotistical, sexist boss, Franklin Hart Jr., played by Dabney Coleman.

The Plot and Character Dynamics

9 to 5 Movie Plot and Cast Overview

The story centers on Violet Newstead, played by Lily Tomlin, a seasoned senior office manager repeatedly passed over for promotion; Judy Bernly, played by Jane Fonda, a newly separated woman entering the corporate workforce for the first time; and Doralee Rhodes, played by Dolly Parton, an executive secretary dealing with constant workplace harassment from their supervisor. After bonding over drinks one evening, the three women share their grievances and fantasize about ways to eliminate their boss.

A series of accidental mix-ups leads them to believe they have actually poisoned Hart, sending the trio into a frantic cover-up involving kidnapping and corporate restructuring. While Hart is tied up at home, the women implement sweeping workplace reforms at Consolidated Companies, introducing flexible hours, equal pay, job sharing, and an on-site company-funded day care center. Productivity and morale surge under their management, upending traditional corporate structures.

Cultural Impact and Music Legacy

Beyond marking Parton’s transition from country music icon to film actor, the project yielded one of the most recognizable theme songs in cinema history. Parton wrote and recorded the title track 9 to 5, accompanying the rhythm by clicking her acrylic fingernails together to simulate the sound of a typewriter. The anthem earned Parton an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song and won two Grammy Awards in 1982 for Best Country Song and Best Country Vocal Performance, Female.

The film grossed over $103 million at the box office against a production budget of approximately $10 million, making it one of the highest-earning films of its release year. Critical reception praised the comedic chemistry among Fonda, Tomlin, and Parton, as well as the film’s sharp satire of corporate sexism. The themes of wage equality, workplace flexibility, and child care provisions later inspired a Broadway musical adaptation that opened in 2009 with a new score written by Parton.
