Nine-year-old Bowie Daly had a terrifying encounter at Tathra Beach in New South wales, Australia, but walked away with an incredible story and onyl a minor injury. The young surfer’s board, however, wasn’t so lucky. This incident highlights the inherent risks of surfing, the resilience of youth, and the strong community spirit within the surfing world.
A Brush with the Deep: Bowie’s Encounter
Around 3:30 pm local time, Bowie was enjoying the waves at Tathra Beach when a shark suddenly latched onto his surfboard. The attack, though brief, was intensely frightening for the young surfer.
“I was holding onto it [my board] and I felt a tug at the back of my board,” Bowie recounted to the ABC. “I suddenly started drowning but I got back up … it only happened for a second. When I came back up, I saw a giant back and I realized it was a shark and then I started screaming for help.”
Fortunately, the shark quickly released its grip. Bowie was swiftly assisted to shore by fellow surfers, including his father. Remarkably, despite the dramatic encounter, Bowie sustained only a scratch and a hole in his wetsuit.
The Damage: A Board Beyond Repair
While Bowie escaped with minimal physical harm, his surfboard bore the brunt of the attack. The damage was extensive, leaving the board in pieces.
“It made a giant bite mark … it fully took out my fin. My board was fully into pieces … fully wrecked. It was not good,” Bowie explained.
Photos of the board, shared by Simon Daly and featured by the ABC,show a clear and devastating bite mark,a stark reminder of the power of the ocean’s inhabitants.

Community Rallies Around Young Surfer
The incident quickly drew attention from the local surfing community. Andrew Johnson, president of the Tathra Surf Life Saving Club, acknowledged the inherent risks surfers accept when entering the water.
“All surfers think that there’s sharks out there and they just accept that,” Johnson said. Though, he added with a touch of humor, “He’s probably really, really cheesed off that his board’s broken.”
Fortunately, Bowie’s disappointment won’t last long. Former pro surfer Kai Otton, a fellow Tathra local, has generously offered to provide Bowie with a new surfboard. This act of kindness exemplifies the supportive nature of the surfing community.
Back in the Water: Bowie’s unwavering Spirit
Despite the frightening experience, Bowie’s passion for surfing remains undeterred. He’s already planning his return to the waves.
“It’ll be two to four weeks till I get back in,” he said. But upon hearing about the new board from Otton, his enthusiasm soared: “I’m going to go sooner.”
This incident serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of ocean awareness and respect, but also showcases the incredible resilience and spirit of young surfers like Bowie Daly.Related: “I did Not Kill the Shark”: Bethany Hamilton Denies Shark Attack Rumors (Video)
