Israel’s Quest to Win Over Africa: A Challenging Task

Faced with increasing international isolation due to the ongoing conflict in the Palestinian territories, Israel is attempting to break the cycle. Pro-Israel organizations recently held their first parliamentary summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, with the objective of countering Palestinian public opinion in Africa.

The choice of Addis Ababa as the host city is symbolic, drawing on Ethiopia’s rich history and pan-African status. Ethiopia is often referred to as the most Jewish of African nations, with a historical connection to the Jewish people dating back to the time of King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba.

Addis Ababa: A Platform to Address the African Continent

Addis Ababa is the headquarters of the African Union (AU), offering a unique platform to address the entire African continent. The city’s historical significance and strategic location make it an ideal location for pro-Israel organizations to promote their cause.

However, winning over African public opinion will be a challenging task. Africa has traditionally been sympathetic to the Palestinian cause, due to the similarities in their historical struggles for independence. Many Africans view the Palestinian struggle as a reflection of their own experiences under colonial rule.

Africa’s Commitment to the Palestinian Cause

The Organization of African Unity (OAU), the precursor to the AU, has historically supported the Palestinian cause. Yasser Arafat, the former leader of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), was a frequent guest at OAU summits. While some African countries have cooperated with Israel, the majority of Africans remain sympathetic to the Palestinian cause.

Furthermore, Africa is leading the diplomatic battle against Israel, with South Africa accusing Israel of “genocide” and referring the matter to the International Court of Justice (ICJ). The tragic consequences of the conflict, including the loss of over 40,000 lives, including 14,000 children, have only strengthened African resolve to support the Palestinian cause.

A Path to Peace

In order to win over African public opinion, pro-Israel organizations must move beyond rhetoric and take concrete steps towards conflict resolution. This includes promoting the two-state solution and adhering to international law. Only through a commitment to peace and justice can Israel hope to gain the support of the African continent.
