Kamil Concedes Jakarta Gubernatorial Race, Wishes Success to Anung
Former West Java Governor Ridwan Kamil and his running mate Suswono have accepted defeat in the Jakarta gubernatorial election, paving the way for rivals Pramono Anung and Rano Karno to take the helm of Indonesia’s capital.
kamil, speaking at a press briefing in Jakarta on friday, acknowledged the results announced by the Jakarta Elections Commission (KPU) and expressed his decision to accept the outcome.
“After careful consideration, we have decided to accept the results of the Jakarta gubernatorial election as announced by the KPU,” Kamil stated.
The former governor admitted that his team had initially considered contesting the results with the Constitutional Court, citing gathered evidence. However, after consulting with experts and leaders of the Onward Indonesia coalition (KIM), which nominated them, Kamil and Suswono decided against pursuing legal action.
“We didn’t want to further burden the people of Jakarta with another legal challenge,” Kamil explained.
Kamil extended his congratulations to Anung and Karno, wishing them success in leading Jakarta for the next five years. He also expressed gratitude to independent candidate pair Dharma Pongrekun and Kun Wardana for their participation in the election.
Reflecting on the campaign, Kamil emphasized the valuable lessons learned and the importance of the experience in his political career.
“We’ll return to our families and rest after such an exhausting period,” Kamil said, reaffirming his commitment to serving the nation.
The jakarta KPU announced last Sunday that Anung secured a decisive victory with 50.07 percent of the total valid vote in the November 27th poll. Kamil trailed behind with 39.4 percent, while Dharma Pongrekun garnered 10.53 percent.
