Chinese EV maker Nio is setting its sights on Europe with the launch of its new budget-friendly brand, Firefly. The compact hatchback, designed specifically for European city driving, is expected to hit dealerships early next year with a starting price of €19,375 ($20,284) – a competitive price point even after recent EU tariffs on Chinese EVs.

Nio CEO William li unveiled the Firefly at a global debut in Guangzhou, emphasizing the company’s commitment to European expansion. “We will work with local partners on the sale adn service of the Firefly in European markets and leverage our established dealer network,” Li stated.

Designed by nio’s design vice president, Kris Tomasson, who brings experience from BMW and Ford, the Firefly boasts a tight 4.7-metre (15.4-foot) turning circle, making it ideal for navigating Europe’s narrow streets and tight parking spaces.

Nio is touting the Firefly’s safety features, claiming a five-star C-NCAP 2024 safety standard. The car’s body structure is comprised of 83.4% high-strength steel, and it features nine airbags and an advanced driver-assistance system (ADAS).

While Li acknowledges that the EU tariffs will impact the Firefly’s competitiveness, he remains optimistic. “If there weren’t tariffs, it definitely would have a better chance in the market,” he admitted. “Even so, Firefly is very competitive as it is indeed a product developed with real smart EV technologies, which Nio has been investing in for a decade. We are confident in its product competitiveness.”

Nio is also accelerating the rollout of its battery-swapping stations in Europe, with a focus on simpler designs that reduce construction costs and time. Li revealed that these stations for Firefly cars will cost a third less to build than those for Nio-branded cars, and the company is actively seeking local partners to expand its infrastructure.
