Gaza Universities Destroyed; Students Seek Palestine Solidarity

Palestinian students in Gaza are grappling with the systematic destruction of their universities amid ongoing conflict. Once vibrant centers of learning, these institutions now lie in ruins, leaving students and faculty displaced and mourning lost lives. The destruction of Gaza’s universities has not only halted education but also shattered the dreams of countless young people.
Hay’a Adil Agha,a 21-year-old student of science and technology at the islamic University in Gaza,described the technology club as her “second home.” She recounted spending countless hours ther with classmates, developing innovations and pursuing academic goals. Now, she said, ”it destroyed our dreams, destroyed our future, destroyed our aspirations. All our memories now have no meaning. The place is gone and nothing is left.”
The destruction of educational institutions has far-reaching consequences, impacting not only students but also the broader community. Access to education, a fundamental right, has been severely curtailed, exacerbating the already dire humanitarian situation.The loss of universities also represents a meaningful blow to Gaza’s intellectual and cultural landscape.
Despite the immense challenges, students express gratitude for the growing palestine solidarity movement on campuses worldwide. Protests, like those at Columbia University, where students and faculty have been arrested for demonstrating in solidarity with Gaza, offer a glimmer of hope. These acts of support, despite facing repression, provide crucial encouragement to students in Gaza.
A Mohamed Awadh lamented the loss of dreams and basic necessities. “Our dreams and everything else we ever wanted was destroyed with our homes,” Awadh said. “Even learning has been banned here. We’ve started to dream about the simplest of things. Just to eat… They have been robbed of their right to education. Their right to healthcare. They have been robbed of a lot.”
The lack of resources has forced desperate measures. With limited access to gas and other fuels, people have resorted to burning books from university libraries for cooking and heating. This underscores the severity of the humanitarian crisis and the difficult choices faced by residents.
I saw the protests at Columbia University…We want to thank them for standing with us.We thank the free people of the world—professors and students—for standing with us… this has helped us a lot.
