Meta Focuses on Artificial General ‍Intelligence, Assembling AI Team

Updated June 10, 2025

Meta Platforms CEO Mark Zuckerberg is reportedly building a team of 50 artificial intelligence ‍(AI) experts. The goal: to surpass competitors in ⁤the race to achieve artificial⁣ general intelligence (AGI). This move underscores Meta’s commitment to advancing its AI capabilities.

Artificial general intelligence refers to AI that possesses human-level cognitive functions, including the ‌capacity for self-learning. Zuckerberg’s push comes amid reported frustrations with Meta Platforms‘ existing AI capabilities.

According to sources familiar with the plan, the new team, comprised of AI researchers and engineers, has been internally dubbed a “superintelligence group.” The team will be ‌located near Zuckerberg at Meta’s Menlo Park, California, headquarters.

Llama 4⁤ LLM Concerns

Zuckerberg’s hands-on approach to recruitment stems ⁤partly from concerns about the quality and ⁣reception of Llama 4, Meta’s latest large language model (LLM). Last month, reports indicated that Meta delayed ‌the launch ⁢of its “Behemoth” AI model, a new version of‌ Llama 4, due ⁤to concerns about insufficient improvements over previous versions.

In April, Meta announced plans ⁤to increase its capital expenditures for the year to between $64 billion and $72⁣ billion. The investment aims to bolster the company’s AI capacity.

Meta shares were up approximately 1% in premarket trading Tuesday, adding to a nearly 20% gain year-to-date.

What’s next

The⁤ formation of this‍ specialized AI team signals Meta’s intensified‌ focus on artificial general intelligence. The company’s progress in this area will be closely watched as it competes with other tech giants in the rapidly evolving AI ⁤landscape.
