Mercedes F1 Driver Decision Looms Amid Verstappen, Russell Speculation
Updated July 01, 2025
Toto Wolff, Mercedes’ team principal, hopes to finalize the team’s 2026 driver lineup before Formula 1’s summer break concludes. Uncertainty surrounds george Russell’s future with the team, as his contract has yet to be extended.
Wolff has confirmed his interest in perhaps signing Max Verstappen, the four-time world champion currently under contract with Red Bull through 2028. Speculation suggests Verstappen coudl trigger an exit clause if he finishes below fourth in the championship standings after the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Wolff maintains that his interest in Verstappen does not effect ongoing discussions with Russell. He aims to resolve Russell’s situation during the four-week break.
“You need to be respectable towards the stakeholders in all of that process,” Wolff said.”The institution, the drivers, everybody. You need to understand the way forward.” He added that he doesn’t want to keep any driver waiting unnecessarily and aims to make a decision before the summer break concludes, possibly “in the middle” of it.
Red Bull’s Christian Horner dismissed the Mercedes-Verstappen speculation as “a lot of noise,” adding that Verstappen finds it annoying. Verstappen himself has consistently avoided questions about a potential move to Mercedes. Russell stated after winning the Canadian Grand Prix that he has not spoken with other teams and remains focused on racing for Mercedes. Andrea Kimi Antonelli joined Mercedes this year, but the length of his contract remains undisclosed.
What’s next
The coming weeks will be crucial as Mercedes navigates its driver options for 2026, balancing the potential acquisition of verstappen with the future of current driver George Russell. The Formula 1 world awaits Wolff’s decision.
