Pistorius Eyes Increased Arms Output to Meet Soaring Demand
German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has announced enterprising plans to significantly increase the production of weapons in his country. This strategic move is a direct response to booming spending plans, particularly aimed at bolstering Ukraine’s capacity to defend itself against ongoing Russian aggression. The minister’s proactive stance underscores Germany’s commitment to playing a more considerable role in European security architecture.
Roadmap for European Security Support on the Agenda
Pistorius is scheduled to meet wiht U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth in Washington on Monday. the central focus of their discussions will be a “roadmap for American security support in Europe.” The German minister emphasized that any reduction in American aid should not be perceived as “an invitation for [Vladimir] Putin,” highlighting the critical need for sustained and reliable support for Ukraine and the broader European security landscape.
Germany’s Defense Budget Set for Major Expansion
Berlin intends to substantially increase its annual defense expenses, projecting a rise to €162 billion by 2029. This represents a remarkable 70% increase compared to the 2025 budget. “There is no longer any reason to complain now,” stated the minister, addressing German shipowners. “The industry knows very well that it must now bring results.” This meaningful financial commitment signals a clear intent to modernize and expand Germany’s military capabilities.
Industry Urged to Deliver on Increased Capacity
The Defence Minister stressed the imperative for the defense industry to enhance its production capacities across a wide spectrum of military hardware. “The industry must increase its capacities. This applies to ammunition, drones, tanks – to almost all sectors, in short,” he asserted. While reaffirming Germany’s commitment to bolstering its own defense and supporting allies, Pistorius reiterated that Germany would not be sending its long-range Taurus missiles, a capability long sought by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Patriot Systems: A Delicate Balancing Act
Regarding the Patriot anti-aircraft systems, which the United States has pledged to Ukraine to counter russian strikes, Pistorius indicated that Germany possesses “more than six” such systems and “definitely cannot provide more” to Kyiv at this time. However,he revealed that he would discuss a proposal with hegseth for Germany to purchase two additional Patriot systems from the United States specifically on behalf of Ukraine. This initiative demonstrates Germany’s creative approach to addressing critical defense needs for its allies.
A Stance of Strength and Peace
Concluding his remarks, Pistorius articulated Germany’s strategic beliefs: “I have always been convinced that if you want to talk about peace and relaxation on an equal footing, you can only do it in a standby position, at the height of eyes. The goal is not to intimidate, but to show that we certainly know what we are capable of. We want to live in peace with you, but do not think that we are weak or that we will not defend ourselves.
